ALBERT LEA, Minn. – Thousands of students throughout our area rely on the fact that they will receive food at school, but many of those families have a tough time even affording that.
The free and reduced lunch program is a service designed to help those families bridge the gap and allow students to receive a nutritious lunch during the day.
Halverson Elementary School in Albert Lea has seen this need increase over time.
The school has a little more than 350 students enrolled, however of that, 75 percent of them are also enrolled in the free and reduced lunch plan.
It’s a shocking statistic but one that school officials like Principal Nick Sofio, are learning to deal with.
“We’ve grown a little bit from last year to this year, in terms of the number of students who are on the free and reduced lunch,” Sofio says, “but not necessarily significantly, just a small growth.”
Amanda Stender is a single mom who has been a part of this program for the past five years.
With two kids in school, the bills can really add up as she needs to buy two sets of school supplies, school clothes and, school lunches.
Stender says she’s thankful to have this program and doesn’t know what she would do without it.
“I really can’t afford the two of them, so we had an option to apply for it and we applied and we qualified for it.”
However, t’s not just the Albert Lea School district that is seeing these types of statistics.
According to data from the Minnesota Department of Education, there are currently more than 200,000 students eligible for free lunches and another 60,000 eligible for reduced price lunches.
Mason City Public Schools say they have seen their numbers increase from 43 percent in 2009, to 51 percent in 2014.
Along with that, Rochester Public Schools currently have nearly 37 percent of their students enrolled in the program.
Minnesota lawmakers are working to pass a bill that would put $3.5 million toward students who qualify for the 40 cent, reduced-priced meals however, help is still needed for schools which is why Halverson Elementary is partnering with their local Rotary Club to help them raise money.

This past November, five Minnesota school districts held a GMO Awareness Day. The Minnesota schools are Hopkins, Minneapolis, Orono, Shakopee and Westonka. Unfortunately, the GMO Awareness Day was more of a “Fear” GMO Day than an “Awareness” Day.

The back of the Westonka school’s student menu included this statement, “Though the corporations that sell GMO chemicals and seeds have concluded that GMOs are safe to eat, independently funded research has repeatedly linked GMO consumption to cancers, organ damage, allergies, infertility and more. (For more on safety research, see the Non-GMO Project)”

Are you kidding me? The Non-GMO Project?
The Non-GMO project is nothing more than fear-mongering propaganda.

Only anti-GMO organizations make this claim. The vast majority of plant scientists/geneticists disagree with this statement. There are over 2000 studies and all the major scientific societies that agree there is no negative health effects on humans.  Jim Cooper of the Examiner.com wrote a great article, Minnesota Schools Teach Bad Science and then Cover it up, which goes into detail about what we know (or lack thereof). I will also add that I, too, tried to make contact with these individuals. And while Jim finally was able to talk with someone after many tries, no one contacted me. It appears they were trying to keep a very low profile.
Even though this propaganda stint happened a few months ago and we don’t know exactly who or what was behind it, there is a bigger concern that comes to mind. How do we know what is taught in our schools? Who or what organizations are influencing our schools? Do you know your Food Service Director in your school district? Are our schools teaching science or propaganda? The solution?
We need to be vigilant in what is taught in our schools. We need to know who is running our schools. Ask questions. Be aware of what is happening in your local schools. And it’s going to take each one of us. As parents and tax-paying citizens, we need to take this seriously and ask questions. Be assertive, or a pain if you must.
And what should the schools do?
Teach science and critical thinking skills. What a better place and time to learn the skills needed to make good food choices than a learning environment such as our schools. There is no question that our society is generally weak in using science and critical thinking skills. Too many of us either don’t want to take the time or don’t know how to use critical thinking skills. And what a better time and place to learn these skills than in our schools? Our society, in general, has become too dependent on easy information access through simple searches on the internet. I personally don’t want our students (or the general public) to learn about GMOs through a simple google search where the top, non-sponsored search results are outright lies and propaganda. Teach the science. Let’s demand the propaganda and biases, wherever they are coming from, be left at the school’s front door.
As a farmer, it’s eye opening to see the vast amounts of agricultural misinformation that is filtering into our society.  People are taking too much of this misinformation at face value as being the truth. And that is just plain scary.
I believe we need all types of farmers to feed our growing population, both GMO and non-GMO crops. But I am against spreading misinformation and vilifying agricultural practices that are different from another’s beliefs. The food we produce in the United States is one of the safest in the world. Let us not forget that. So let’s support farmers – all farmers.
So, again, what is your school lunch serving? It’s time to find out.

FOLEY — State department officials dined with Foley High School students Tuesday in the cafeteria as they got an up-close look at the results of the district’s “Farm To School” program. The farmers who were responsible for the fresh produce being served at lunchtime ate there, too.
On Tuesday’s menu: chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy with rosemary and thyme right from the school’s garden, along with a homemade roll, squash, watermelon, bananas and more. Patty Donahue, cook manager for grades 4-12, said she based the gravy recipe off one used by the Food Network’s Ina Garten.
Foley is among more than 200 districts statewide in the Farm to School program, which serves half of Minnesota’s students, according to information provided by the state. The Foley district has participated since 2012. Farm to School has awarded money to districts to help them participate in the program; Foley received about $11,000 from the state for fiscal year 2015.

The Foley school district gets fresh produce from Stoney Brook Farms and Novak Farms, both near Foley. Representatives from the farms as well as the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, which awards grants related to Farm to School, are visiting schools around the state.
The Foley district is buying a tilting braising pan so it can make more meals from scratch, too.
Farm to School means more prep time for kitchen staffers, Foley school service director Cheryl Pick said. The benefits far outweigh the time, though.
“The kids enjoy it, and that’s why we do it,” she said.
School officials said up to 87 percent of high school students take hot meals; Foley High School has about 1,600 students.
Many high school students at lunch Tuesday had banana peels or green strawberry tops on their trays. Students can take unlimited amounts of fruits and veggies.
“You see so much color on their plates,” Foley High School Principal Shayne Kusler said.

The farms provide everything from sweet corn to kohlrabi for the lunches.
“It’s good to promote the fresh vegetable aspect of it for the kids,” said Mark Chmielewski of Stoney Brook Farm.
Greg Novak of Novak Farm recently sold 48 quarts of strawberries, an 800-pound bin of watermelon and cucumbers to the district. Farm to School is good for his business. His only request: He wishes Minnesota schools could start earlier so Foley could get the best of his harvest, but he likes closing out the season with the district. (And when he was a student at Foley, no, he doesn’t believe he had such healthful choices at lunchtime.)
Ellie Manderfeld, a Foley senior, admitted she likes fruits more than veggies.
“When we have the options, it’s nice,” she said.
Many of the students were busy getting big cups of what looked like ice cream at lunchtime. School officials had to break it to them that it was frozen yogurt.

THIS ACCESS IS AVAILABLE ONLY THROUGH YOUR PARENTVUE ONLINE ACCOUNT.   (If you do not have a ParentVUE account set up yet, please stop at any one of our schools to fill out a short application, show proof of ID and you will be given an activation key for you to complete the set-up of your online account.)  Then contact Barbara Fredrickson in Food Service to obtain your assigned ID/PIN #s for your lunch account access. 

1. Log into your ParentVUE account and click on the Lunch Account link on the left-hand side of your computer screen.
2. This will take you to another view where the words Lunch Account will be in Blue as a hot link-- click on that link.
3. The Wordware window for Family Account Login will appear.
4. Click in the Username box and enter your Family ID number.
5. Click in the Password box and enter your assigned PIN number.
6. Click on Sign In.
7. Click on the drop-down arrow to choose the correct state.  Click on Minnesota to fill in the state box.
8. Choose the school district from the drop-down arrow:  Mora Public Schools.
9. Click on Sign In. 
10. The school lunch account summary screen will appear with information on your family meal account.
11. Scroll to the bottom of the summary screen and click on the statement: " To view a detailed report of transactions, Click Here " to view recent transactions.
12. There is a link at the bottom of that page where you may chose to view transactions dating further back by clicking on the " To request prior history transactions, Click Here "
13. You can choose the date range in which you want to see your transactions by clicking on the circle in front of the available date ranges.
14. Verify the email address where you wish the statement to be sent to and press send request.

St. Cecilia Academy - Lunch Program / Nutrition Information/ Family Software Login

Nutrition plays an important role in education.  Students who are well-fed and healthy can more easily concentrate on their studies.  To make sure we meet the nutritional needs of our students, the St. Cecilia Dining Hall offers a wide variety of delicious and healthy menu selections along with the staples and favorites everyone loves. Students have the choice of a hot lunch bar that includes a main entrée and daily vegetable. During the Winter months, we add a selection of fresh made soups. In addition to the hot entrée bar, the Dining Hall also offers a full salad bar with items such as seasonal spring mix and chopped romaine, six varieties of fresh vegetables along with hummus, tuna salad, cottage cheese and fruit to name a few. For those days that a salad just won’t do, we offer 3 choices of pizza along with chicken tenders and French fries. Excess sugar is always a concern and for this reason, we do not offer daily desserts.  The students have the choice of variety of Blue Bell ice creams to choose from. Drink selections include bottled water, 2% milk, chocolate milk, orange, cranberry and apple juice, fresh ice tea, lemonade, coffee, hot tea, and hot chocolate.
The St. Cecilia Dining Hall utilizes the Wordware School Lunch System to manage lunch purchases and family accounts. Each family is assigned an account and payments can be made online after registering your account or by sending in a check or cash to the school office.
To log into your family Dining Hall account, follow the link below.  You will need your family ID number along with a pin number to register your account for the first time. If you do not know these numbers, please contact Kathleen Urciuoli at urciuolik@overbrook.edu.  Once your account is registered, you will receive balance notifications and be able to track daily purchases.

At PCPS, students can get a breakfast complete with fruit, 100% fruit juice, whole grains, and milk for $1.10. All kindergarten students eat free breakfast this year!  Pine City Elementary School will have several guest servers throughout the week, new menu items, small give-aways, taste testing and student voting.  Pine City High School will be offering taste testing, a new menu item and student voting.  ​ National School Breakfast Week 2015 Highlights All week students that attend breakfast will have a chance to vote on the main breakfast entree. Today (Monday) out of the 142 students that voted on the Egg Wrap 68% liked the wrap and would try it again! Monday morning Mr. Weiss and Mr. Hansmann helped out at the Elementary and served breakfast to students! Tuesday's guest server was Mrs. Lorsung! Student council members assisted other stuents in the pancake toss game! Tuesday 138 students voted on the banana bread and yogurt breakfast and 95% said they liked it! Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Smith were the guest servers on Wednesday for Breakfast Pizza! Students voted on the popular breakfast pizza and out of 169 students who voted, 92% said they liked it! Thursday's guest servers were the music teachers Mrs. Cahill and Mrs. Hansmann! Thursday students voted on "the FRED" which is a whole grain oatmeal cookie. Out of the 157 students who voted 92% reported liking "the FRED"! All week students had the opportunity to vote on the new and old food items! Nutrition Education in the Classroom Former Food and Nutrition Director, Abby Olson RD, and Dietetic Intern, Hannah Colby, taught several kindergarten classrooms a lesson on trying new foods through a book called "I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato" by Lauren Child. Students also gave examples of new foods they tried and liked when they thought they would not like the new food by just looking at it. Students were given samples of a dessert hummus and tried a fruit many had never tried before, a mango!!! The snacks were a big hit with the kindergarten students! Check out some photos below. After trying the dessert hummus students were given quick surveys. They were asked whether or not they liked the dessert hummus and a whopping 95% gave a thumbs up to liking the hummus!   May 1st is School Lunch Hero Day. This is a day to recognize the kitchen staff that work hard to prepare meals for students, staff and guests everyday! Wordware Family Website Instructions

Registering on the Family Website

Important: You must fully complete registration in one session in order to guarantee that there are no problems with activating your account. If you think you may not be able to complete registration in a given time, please wait until you know you will not be interrupted. The majority of problems with access to the family site are caused by incomplete registrations.



With a web browser, go to www.wordwareinc.com
Enter username and password and click on the SIGN IN button
This will bring you to the New Account Registration screen Click on I HAVE A FAMILY KEY

o Click in the FAMILY KEY box
o Enter key numbers
o Click on the FINISH CONNECTING NEW FAMILY button
OR

• Click on I HAVE A FAMILY ID AND PIN
• Enter your Family ID and PIN
• This will bring you to the New Account Registration page

Please note: Family IDs, PINs and Family Keys are provided by your school district. If you do not have this information, please contact your school.

• Click on the drop arrow next to the STATE options box and select the appropriate state
• Click on the SCHOOL NAME box and enter the appropriate school name
• Click in the FAMILY ID box and enter the family ID number
• Click in the FAMILY PIN box and enter the family Pin number
• Click on the FINISH CONNECTING NEW FAMILY button

At this point, your registration is almost complete; however your account must be activated.
To activate your account, simply open your email account inbox and select the Wordware Inc email titled Wordware District Account Activation Required, then click on the contained link. It is very important that you complete activation before leaving this page.


Logging into Wordware Family Account

• With a web browser, go to www.wordwareinc.com
• Enter username and password and click on the SIGN IN button
• This will bring you to the Account Dashboard home screen

Adding Funds to the Account

• Click on ADD FUNDS button or click on the quick link I NEED TO ADD FUNDS TO MY FAMILY’S ACCOUNT
• Complete the transaction using your district’s epay provider

Changing User Password

• Click on USER MANAGEMENT
• Click on the CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD link
• Enter your current password
• Create and confirm your new password
• Click on CHANGE PASSWORD button

Changing User Security Question

• Click on USER MANAGEMENT
• Click on CHANGE YOUR SECURITY QUESTION
• Click on drop the arrow next the SECURITY QUESTION options box
• Select desired security question
• Click in the SECURITY ANSWER box and enter answer
• Click on the SAVE SECURITY QUESTION button

Changing Contact Preferences

• Click on USER MANAGEMENT
• Click in the box(es) of desired contact preferences
• Click on the SAVE CONTACT PREFERENCES button

Connecting to Other Family Accounts
*Please be aware that at this time, you are able to connect to other family accounts. To remove other family accounts, you will need to contact your school lunch administrator.

• Click on FAMILY ACCOUNTS
• Click on CONNECT YOUR FAMILY ACCOUNT
• Click on I HAVE A FAMILY KEY

o Click in the FAMILY KEY box
o Enter key numbers
o Click on the FINISH CONNECTING NEW FAMILY button
OR

• Click on I HAVE A FAMILY ID AND PIN

o Click on the drop arrow next to the STATE options box and select the appropriate state
o Click in the SCHOOL NAME box and enter the appropriate school name
o Click in the FAMILY ID box and enter the family ID number
o Click in the FAMILY PIN box and enter the family Pin number
o Click on the FINISH CONNECTING NEW FAMILY button
Add Family User

• Click on FAMILY ACCOUNTS
• Go to the family account where the user will be added
• Click on the ADD A FAMILY USER link
• Click in the box behind EMAIL and enter the users email

*The new user will receive an email invitation from WordWareInc. With instructions on completing the process of being added to the account as a user
